Start a Dog Daycare
If you are interested in starting a dog daycare business, then you probably already meet the first requirement you need to be a success: you really like dogs. Before you get started making plans for your new business venture, you should decide what route you would like to take to achieve your goal. You can either start your own, independent dog daycare business or you can invest in an existing franchise and still have your own business to run.
Try to start out by talking to other people who own dog daycare businesses. Find out what their daily routines are like and try to determine exactly what is involved in owning and operating one of these businesses. It will go a long way towards helping you decide if this is really the right business for you.
You might also want to decide whether you want to specialize in a particular area or service for your clients. Some dog daycare centers also offer grooming, boarding, or obedience training for their client's pets.
Regardless of whether you want to invest in a franchise or start your own business from scratch, you will need to begin by creating a business plan. This is an important step whether you need financing or not, but it is particularly important if you are going to need to obtain bank loans in order to launch your business. If you're not sure how to get started with a business plan, take heart. There are a variety of websites and software programs that are designed to help walk you through the process.
Choose a location for your business. Unless you live on a large farm where a sufficient amount of space could be dedicated solely to your business, you will need to buy or rent some space that has an ample fenced in yard for the animals to play.
The inside of your business will have to be structured so that you have kennels, dog runs, feeding areas, and a small pool for dogs to splash around in. Make sure your facilities are sufficient for accommodating a large number of dogs unless you intend to keep your business small. When deciding just how big you want your business to be, you will need to consider a few different factors.
For one thing, you will need to decide how many employees you want (or can afford) to hire. If you're not going to be able to finance the money to pay more than one or two workers, you will want to keep your business small, at least for the first couple of years. Even if you only hire one employee in the beginning, you will need to be able to train that person properly so that he or she is prepared and able to perform the duties of the job.
Once your dog daycare business is up and running you will need to concentrate your efforts on advertising. In addition to printing up professional looking business cards, flyers, and brochures, you should also take the time to have a website created that showcases what your dog daycare has to offer. If you don't know a lot about creating eye-catching, attractive websites, you might want to spring for the expense of having a professional create one for you.
Keep in mind that people are quick to pass over websites that look unprofessional or that are poorly designed, so it will be worth your time and money to ensure that your site is done well so that you can attract clients. Also, don't forget to hand out your information to your local veterinarian offices, kennels, and dog groomers. The more people who know about your business, the better chance you will have of attracting clients simply through word of mouth.
